Black Garden

Black Garden

Black Garden is a true sculpture in which a ring and its receptacle coexist. The piece is first and foremost an expression of a manifesto: to bring a different perspective on jewellery by giving it as much importance as its staging. Abandoning the use of precious stones, the jeweler combined gold with damascus steel, whose forging techniques he learned during his residency at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto.

With Black Garden, I sought to question the status of jewellery when it is not being worn, by taking the case out of its context and making it an integral part of the work. The base is designed here as a staging device intended to offer a sensory experience, as well as the contemplation of a landscape. Beyond this work, my approach is to take jewellery elsewhere; to move jewellery from the world of luxury to the art by recalling its primary function; a value of protection and memory. Giving up wearing jewellery means giving it another place in its universe...
