Jean-Jacques Pagès

Quatuor à cordes « Hennessy »

Quatuor à cordes « Hennessy »

Creating a string quartet means cutting all the parts from wood that comes from the same log. The cello, viola, and two violins in this set each consist of approximately ninety pieces. The four elements must be worked, assembled, and varnished simultaneously, so that this family blossoms under strictly identical conditions.

Only patronage could revive a momentum interrupted in the 19th century: commissioning a family of instruments made from the wood of the same tree, vibrating with the same harmony, to offer to a young quartet, "the Anton Quartet". The choice of Hennessy was justified by the similarity between the art of creating a cognac and music: The "Hennessy Instrumental Quartet" - a cello, two violins, and a viola - is the work of Jean-Jacques Pagès, Master Luthier in Mirecourt. It was officially presented to the Russian Anton Quartet on October 16, 1991, at the Carnavalet Museum.
