Livre unique en parchemin - Description météorologique, mois par mois, du temps qui passe

Livre unique en parchemin - Description météorologique, mois par mois, du temps qui passe

Bleached kid parchment, velvet goatskins, Canson paper, pigment inks, shellac

In twelve paintings, like the twelve months of the year, Anne-Lise Courchay tells the life of a tree, from its fruits in June to its flowers in May. This one blossoms under the rays of the sun and the moon whose respective races in the sky mark the hours of day and night. In the distance a shining city reflects their light. Thousands of ink droplets are ordered on white kid’s parchment, the whiteness of which is modified by its counter-collage on a colored background in velvet goat skin.

The translucency of the parchment allows for work on a backlight table. The drawings and patterns are prepared in black felt-tip pen on tracing paper, making it easier to distribute the drops of ink deposited with a pen on the page. The quality of the shellac-based inks allows it to adhere to the surface of the parchment without being absorbed, thus reflecting the ambient light. A few drops of opaque ink add to this feeling of craftsmanship. The binding of this unique book is the result of assembling two parchment sheets drawn and then lined with suede leather. The decoration on the spine in vertical lines in the colors of the rainbow comes from this assembly, as does the coloring of the edges. The covers in white kid parchment are worked in relief and transparency, then pierced with small cloud-shaped openings.

Manufacturing process

Inspired by the books of hours of the Middle Ages, this book is unique.
This book represents more than 500 hours of work.
The original drawings are pen-and-ink.
The inks are based on natural pigments and shellac (waterproof).
The parchment that I personally choose is made in France.
The velvet goatskins are tanned in France.
The binding technique is a personal development based on the properties of the parchment, as is the decoration technique.
