Lucile Viaud explores the intimate link between landscape and matter, and creates her “géoverrerie”, undertaking the transformation of local co-products and neglected resources into natural glasses. Through projects in different regions, she highlights the influence of the origin of raw materials on the nature of the geoglasses she obtains.
Defending the idea that waste is a treasure waiting to be sublimated, it raises awareness of the preservation of our natural resources and heritage through a research-creation approach involved for Art-Science. It makes a point of honor to awaken by the object, make accessible by the work.
The exchange and sharing of knowledge – both historical, scientific and technical – with local actors allows him to explore glass in all its forms. Supported by the University of Rennes 1 since 2017, she conducts various research works in collaboration with the Verres & Céramiques team (Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes) on both glass compositions and their future applications.
"GÉOVERRERIE néo.n.f — Idea that glass could reflect the natural and human characteristics of the region from which the raw materials that compose it come."
Co-products, waste, scrap or even production waste are all neglected materials that the researcher is interested in, which transforms them into exceptional materials from season to season. Today, the Atelier develops its pieces and collections in a logic of valorization of artisanal know-how, heritage and natural resources. Because she creates her own materials, the artist-researcher acquires the expertise, allowing her to reveal through her different projects their plastic qualities but also the poetry of the territory from which they come.
Intimately convinced that object or work of art and scientific contribution form an inseparable object, she conducts her production and research following a precise working protocol learned through experience and sharing with researchers from different backgrounds that she meets. Considering her geophysics as a field of research, she regularly records her work by object, writing & visual, nourishing her repertoire over the developed glasses.
